WHAT IS RAMMED EARTH?

completed walls - middleton wa

Durable and timeless

Rammed earth construction is an ancient, widespread, and durable building technique. One-third of the world's buildings are constructed using stabilised forms of earth.

In many countries, earth walls built centuries or millennia ago remain standing, despite the weathering effects of harsh climates.

Today's rammed earth walls are even more resilient, thanks to the use of modern engineering and construction techniques and materials that ensure optimum strength, stability and impermeability.

They are a solid, soundproof, monolith mass, generally 300 millimetres thick, and usually with no cavity. Rammed earth mixes that contain no organic matter are also vermin and fire resistant.

How is it done?

Rammed earth structures are made using locally-sourced gravels that are batched with cement and waterproofing additives. The damp mixture is laid in formwork in consecutive regular courses and pneumatically compacted, each course bonding with the next.

The waterproofing component makes rammed earth walls an excellent choice for external house walls, landscaping and retaining walls.
